26-28 January, The Center for Religious Studies at the Digital Humanities conference AIUCD 2017 - Rome

ISR researcher Boris Rähme will present a paper at the 2017 conference of the Italian Association for Digital Humanities and Digital Cultures (AIUCD). The conference, entitled "The Reverse Telescope: Big Data and Distant Reading in the Humanities”, will take place at Sapienza University in Rome from 26 to 28 January 2017 (the conference programme is available here). Rähme’s talk will be based on the paper Religious and gender issues through the lens of a TV series: Watching OITNB, co-authored by Mariachiara Giorda (FBK-ISR), Giovanni Moretti (FBK-ICT), Boris Rähme (FBK-ISR), Marco Stranisci (Fondazione Benvenuti in Italia), Sara Tonelli (FBK-ICT), and Federica Turco (University of Turin). The paper, whose thematic scope cuts across the ISR research lines “Values, Science and technology”, “Spirituality and Lifestyles” and “Conflicts”, presents a multi-disciplinary analysis of gender and religious topics within the widely followed TV series Orange is the New Black (OITNB). It includes a use case of the keyphrase-extraction tool Keyphrase Digger, developed by FBK’s Digital Humanities Unit, and its origins trace back to a collaboration between FBK-ISR and the Digital Humanities Unit of FBK-ICT in the context of the 2016 edition of the “Religion Today” film festival.
