A CONVERSATION ABOUT TWO BOOKS

11:00 – 12:00

Debora Tonelli presents the book “Fratelli tutti? Believers and non-believers in dialogue with Pope Francis” (Castelvecchi, Rome 2022): The collection of essays that composes “Fratelli tutti? credenti e non credenti in dialogo con Papa Francesco” is a response to the The Abu Dhabi Document as well as the Encyclical Brothers to reflect not only on fundamental problems of humanity, but also on the criteria from which we should face them, first among all, knowing how to recognize each other as brothers and sisters. The focus is on the object, not on the origin of the gaze. Saggi di: Domenico Bilotti, Antonio Cecere, Giovanni Luchetti, Gianfranco Macrì, Paolo Quintili, Mario Reale, Antonio Spadaro SJ, Debora Tonelli, Gianni Vattimo. The essays encourage a critical reflection rather than offer a theoretical vision in itself, as if to say that the fruitfulness of the challenge lies precisely in the plurality of visions that it manages to bring into play and not in the sharing of a thesis.

After a comment by Lucia Galvagni, discussion with the audience will follow.

With the participation of Antonio Cecere, Domenico Bilotti and Giovanni Luchetti.

Secularization: Where Are We?

The Post-Secular City (Brill 2022) is the English version of a volume published in Italy in 2019. Being the work of its author himself (Paolo Costa), the translation was also an opportunity to reflect on the book’s main goal: to take stock of the recent debate on secularization by offering an overview of its main junctures and developments.

But is it really possible to objectively map a debate on a topic as controversial as the fate of religion in modernity? How many contentious theoretical choices are needed to achieve this? And, with the benefit of hindsight, did we really need it?

The author will discuss these issues with Matteo Bortolini, professor of General Sociology at the University of Padua.
