Artificial Intelligence anomalies, hallucinations and visions

The latest generative AI models do not always behave as expected, sometimes producing errors, unexpectedresults, or nonsensical outputs, referred to as “AI hallucinations.” This term draws an analogy with humanhallucinations, which typically involve perceptions without an object or distortions of perceived objects. In AI, however, “hallucination” mainly refers to malfunctions or unforeseen behavior leading to falseinformation generation. The causes behind these malfunctions often remain unclear, partly due to theopacity (black box) of AI models. By analyzing artistic and scientifi c case studies, this exploration will showhow such anomalies are not always errors to avoid but can, in some cases, serve as heuristic solutions. Theconcept of hallucination will thus be examined in its interpretative variability, highlighting its potential aseither a euphoric or dysphoric event, to be corrected or embraced.

Luca Brunet, classe 1997, è un appassionato di semiotica, cinema e media. Nato e cresciuto in Valle d'Aosta, si è diplomato al liceo classico XXVI Febbraio. Nel 2016 ha intrapreso il percorso di laurea triennale in Lettere Moderne a Bologna, seguito da una laurea magistrale in Semiotica nella stessa città, conclusa a settembre 2023 con la discussione della tesi "Semiotica interpretativa al cinema. Esperienza, media e traduzione intersemiotica. Il caso del film psichedelico", redatta con il relatore prof. Claudio Paolucci e il co-relatore prof. Ruggero Eugeni, ottenendo una votazione di 110 e lode. Presso l’Università di Bologna ha inoltre ricoperto il ruolo di tutor del corso di laurea in Semiotica negli anni accademici 2021/2022 e 2022/2023. Da ottobre 2023 ha iniziato il corso di dottorato di interesse nazionale "Immagine, linguaggio, figura: forme e modi della mediazione", nel curriculum di Semiotica, presso l'Università degli Studi di Torino. Attualmente sta sviluppando un progetto dedicato allo studio delle interpretazioni delle allucinazioni, emergenti nel rapporto tra umani e dispositivi mediali, con un focus specifico sulle allucinazioni dell'intelligenza artificiale.
