The presentation aims to examine the issue of solitude and communion through the prism of the intersection between the biography and intellectual output of Marie-Dominique Chenu (1895–1990). Despite his international recognition as a distinguished medievalist, Chenu was publicly condemned by ecclesiastical institutions, his works were placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, and he was removed from all teaching positions. This backlash was triggered by his close engagement with the historicity of theological truths, the materiality of social issues, and the reality of political ferment, which he actively experienced in one of the poorest, most working-class neighborhoods during the 1940s in Paris. To this end, the analysis will start from Chenu’s conceptualization of “labor” as presented in his short text “Pour être heureux, travaillons ensemble” (1942), in order to investigate his reflection on the “common life” of humanity.
