The principal ground of conflict in the ‘culture wars’ has shifted in both the United States and Europe. Especially for religious conservatives, the key battleground now is religious accommodation claims from laws prohibiting discrimination against LGBT persons or guaranteeing access to contraception and other reproductive health services.
Analyzing accommodation/discrimination conflicts within the dual frames of dignity and place, with attention to the European situation, the lecture suggests possibilities of mediation and compromise of what otherwise seem like intractable disputes in the United States.
Luca Diotallevi (Rome Tre University) and Silvia Angeletti (University of Perugia) will participate at the lecture as discussants.

Brigham Young UniversityFrederick Gedicks has held the Guy Anderson Chair at the Law School of Brigham Young University since 2005. Professor Gedicks joined the BYU law faculty in 1990 after four years at Mercer University in Macon (Georgia), and a year at the University of Denver. He has been a visiting professor at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Utah. He is widely published on law and religion, constitutional law, and constitutional interpretation, including his recent book Freedom of Religion and Secular Government (West Academic, 2017) (with Robert W. Tuttle, Nelson Tebbe & Micah Schwartzman).

University of PerugiaSilvia Angeletti is associate professor of ecclesiastical and canon law at the University of Perugia. She was a visiting fellow at the UN in Geneva, the High Commission for Human Rights, and the Universities of Paris, Lugano, and Leuven. Hes main research interests concern the relationship between church and state, the international and regional legal protection of religious freedom, and the rights of religious minorities. Her publications include: Libertà religiosa e patto internazionale sui diritti civili e politici: La prassi del comitato per i diritti umani delle Nazioni Unite (Torino 2009).

Università Roma TreLuca Diotallevi is professor of Sociology at the Roma Tre University. He graduated in philosophy at the University La Sapienza in Rome, and defended his PhD in sociology at the University of Parma. Later, he studied at the University of Bielefeld, and was a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of World Religions at the Divinity School of Harvard University.
