The Davide Zordan Lecture is annually held in Autumn. It was established to honor the memory of a researcher of the Center for Religious Studies of FBK, who died in 2015.
In his talk, Robert A. Orsi will address two questions as a scholar of religion. First, how did the creation and authorization of the category “modern religion” contribute to the making of the world we find ourselves in today? Second, is it possible to reimagine a religion “after religion” so that the teaching and study of religion post-“religion” become sites for generating new visions of possible futures. These questions speak as well to the role of the humanities and social sciences in this urgent time and of the university itself.
The lecture will be in English, but the audience will be able to follow the Italian translation on a screen.

Robert A. Orsi (1953) holds the Grace Craddock Nagle Chair in Catholic Studies in the Religion Department of Northwestern University (Chicago); he holds a joint appointment in History. Before joining Northwestern, he taught at Fordham University, at Indiana University, and at Harvard Divinity School. He was president of the American Academy of Religion in 2002-03. His first book, The Madonna of 115th Street: Faith and Community in Italian Harlem, 1880-1950 (Yale, 1985, 2nd ed. 2002), received the John Gilmary Shea Prize from the American Catholic Historical Association and the Jesuit National Book Award. This was followed by Thank You, Saint Jude: Women’s Devotion to the Patron Saint of Hopeless Causes (Yale, 1996); Between Heaven and Earth: The Religious Worlds People Make and the Scholars Who Study Them (Princeton, 2004). Orsi has also edited The Cambridge Companion to Religious Studies (Cambridge, 2012).
