In several of his speeches, addressing theologians, Pope Francis has called for a radical renewal of theology, a real turning point in the sign of a paradigm shift that results in “a fundamentally contextual theology , capable of reading and interpreting the Gospel in the conditions in which men and women daily live, in the different geographical, social and cultural environments and having as its archetype the Incarnation of the eternal Logos, its entering into the culture, worldview and religious tradition of a people” (Motu proprio, Ad theologiam promovendam no. 4, 1/11/2023). In view of this goal, the Pontiff asks theologians that in this renewal effort ample space be given to interaction with other experts, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. How then to interpret this call for transformation? And how to reconcile this necessary renewal with the need to preserve the specific nature, object and purpose of Sacred Science? How does theology relate to so-called Religious Studies? In the awareness of the complexity of these issues, various aspects and elements at stake need to be weighed.
