Lo spazio della cura: prospettive filosofiche sull’architettura psichiatrica
Palazzo Paolo Prodi
Via Tommaso Gar 14, Trento
Aula 001
3rd seminar of the cycle of meetings ‘Medicine and Environment’, organised in collaboration with the Centre for Religious Sciences of the Bruno Kessler Foundation of Trento and the Department of Humanities of the University of Trento for the year 2025.
This talk aims to explore the differing relationship with space and the architecture of the psychiatric institution as seen in the work of Michel Foucault and of Franco Basaglia, despite their mutual influence and the many points of contact between the philosopher and the psychiatrist.
Foucault interprets the asylum as a disciplinary machine, a structure designed to subjugate bodies and institutionalize madness, making architecture an inevitable extension of psychiatric power. Basaglia, on the other hand, experiments with how the transformation of space can contribute to the process of subjectivization of patients, necessary for the process of deinstitutionalization.
The comparison between the two approaches shows how architecture is never neutral but intrinsically linked to power logics and social processes, and poses absolutely relevant questions to contemporary architecture: the relationship between rights and the use of spaces, and above all, the time and space of healing that a society produces and imagines for those who are not considered “healthy”
