Over the years, the study of religions online has established itself as a living laboratory from which to observe the transformation of the contemporary religious phenomenon. The experience of the digitalization of our daily lives-which has intensified in the pandemic period-continues to prove the validity of these studies by demonstrating how systems and institutions that shape our daily lives are inextricably linked to the virtual dimension of the internet, including the religious ones.
In this context, this presentation aims to provide a brief reconstruction of the current state of digital religion studies and apply some of its theories and methods to a specific case, that of multisite churches. A multisite church is a church with a central location that serves as a hub or production centre for the church’s activities and worship content, which is distributed via video or webcasts to multiple sites in different locations.
The case of multisite churches presented is intended to open a broader reflection on whether and how it is possible to reproduce religious practices and recreate faith communities using Internet technology alone, and to highlight some implications that arise in this process of transformation and renegotiation between religious and digital practices.

Alessandra Vitullo - SpeakerSapienza University of RomeAlessandra Vitullo is research fellow at Sapienza University of Rome, where she teaches Sociology of Communication and Sociology of Migration. She is the associate director of the Network for New Media Religion and Digital Culture Studies; and the scientific coordinator of the Religions and Social Change Lab at Sapienza University. She was researcher in several universities and research centers, such as Texas A&M University, KU Leuven, Uppsala University, "Bicocca" University of Milan, and the Bruno Kessler Foundation. Her latest book The Religionautes: Studying Homo Religiosus in the Time Of the Web, was published in Italian in 2021.
