Evolution of Jewish Bioethics

Judaism is a religion and culture that originated around 35 centuries ago. Despite its age, it has never ceased to engage with contemporary challenges. As a religious system rooted in the Hebrew Bible and the writings of the rabbinic tradition, it must refer to these foundations in order to offer responses to modern-day problems.
The challenge lies in how it is possible to find guidance in such ancient sources to solve issues raised by the rapid development of technology—issues presented in ways that would have been unimaginable in ancient times or even just a few decades ago. The talk will provide examples of solutions to current bioethical dilemmas, focusing especially on the methodology used to apply traditional sources. It will discuss, among other things, questions concerning the beginning and end of life.
