I was born in Milan in 1966. I studied Philosophy at the University of Milan, where I graduated with a thesis on H. Arendt’s and J. Habermas’s conceptions of language and public sphere. I did my PhD in Philosophical Anthropology at the University of Parma in the years 1995-1997. My supervisor was F. Andolfi and, under his guidance, I wrote a dissertation on Charles Taylor, that became a book some years later (Verso un’ontologia dell’umano, 2001). In 1997, I was a visiting scholar at the University of Toronto (Department of Political Science).

I have been a member of the “Seminario permanente di Teoria Critica” since 1991, and an editor of “Fenomenologia e società” and “La società degli individui”, respectively, since 1994 and 1998.

I have been working as a translator for various Italian publishers (Mimesis, Armando, Feltrinelli, Meltemi, and others) since 1994.

In 1999, I spent a year at the Religious Science Centre of the Istituto Trentino di Cultura, working on Charles Taylor’s Gifford Lectures. I got back to Parma with a two-years post-doctoral fellowship in 2001 and, during that period, I mostly worked and taught courses on Martha Nussbaum. Afterward, I was invited by the Religious Science Centre to join a research group on the topic “Philosophy, Religion, and Natural Science”. The subject of my investigation was the relationship between Darwinian naturalism and ethics. The project’s main output was a monograph that came out in 2007 (Un’idea di umanità. Etica e natura dopo Darwin). In 2006, I joined another research project called “The Future of Human Nature”.

In 2008, I became a permanent researcher of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (former ITC). In 2009, I edited the Italian translation of two important works by Charles Darwin and Charles Taylor (The Voyage of the Beagle and A Secular Age), both for Feltrinelli. I was the Director of the Corso Superiore di Scienze Religiose at FBK from 2009 to 2012. My last two books are La ragione e i suoi eccessi (Milan: Feltrinelli, 2014; winner of the Premio Nazionale di Divulgazione Scientifica 2014) and In una stanza buia. Filosofia e teologia in dialogo (with D. Zordan, Trento: FBK Press, 2014).

I am currently writing a book about the new debate on secularization, which is scheduled to be published by Queriniana (Brescia) in 2018 .

I am married with Cecilia and I have a child (Andrea).
