There is widespread skepticism regarding the usefulness of theology—within academia, in the public sphere, and even within the Church, its three natural domains. Nevertheless, some voices highlight its potential corrective role in addressing negative trends observed across various sectors, such as medicine, education, sustainability issues, and even the stability of democratic systems. Clearly, a theology capable of responding to such demanding challenges would need to be rethought and reshaped, taking a form quite different from the current one.
Yet, it is not a pious illusion to imagine theology playing a role in shaping belief systems or in providing meaning and hope in times of growing uncertainty. A recent example is the anxiety surrounding the development of artificial intelligence. In any case, a segment of theological reflection should reconsider its mission and functions in light of these new contexts, aiming to offer support that goes beyond mere ethical commentary.
If theology is to assume a broader mission, it must first cultivate a deeper capacity to interpret the “signs of the times” and to discern their normative value, informed by its own Christian revelation. Furthermore, it should be equipped to conduct analyses that consider the distinction between salvation and loss in a broader sense. Ultimately, theology should contribute to the development of beliefs most suited to our present context and its particular challenges.
