Space, she contends, is not merely a backdrop but the very medium through which societal change unfolds. Since the 1960s, we have been witnessing a refiguration of social spaces, a process that often manifests as uncertainty, giving rise to tensions and conflicts within and between societies. Löw traces the contours and consequences of these spatial refigurations, beginning with the shifts initiated by early modernity and culminating in the radical restructurings characteristic of late modernity. Her analysis concentrates on the transformation of spatial structures and spatial knowledge within urban contexts, advancing the thesis that social uncertainty is, more often than not, a direct consequence of spatial disorientation.
